In the evaluations from the Innovations in Teaching and Learning conferences, attendees noted that they were interested in the possibility of participating in a book group where we would read and discuss a common text.
Based on this feedback, the CTFE decided to host such a group for the first time in the spring of 2012. Over 50 faculty, staff, and graduate students signed up for the group, and the CTFE purchased books for each participant. We discussed Stephen Brookfield’s Teaching for Critical Thinking (Jossey-Bass, 2011), leading to his joining us at our Innovations in Teaching & Learning conference as the keynote speaker.
In spring 2013, we are hosting our 2nd annual book group. This year, the book under discussion will be Susan A. Ambrose, et. al.’s How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (Jossey-Bass, 2010). We look forward to another productive, enjoyable semester with our Mason colleagues. To join, please send us an email, and we’ll arrange to get you a copy of the book.
